As the days are getting closer to summer and I am getting ready to study abroad, I am getting more
and more excited to start my adventure in London. I have been reflecting on everything I have
learned in the preparation class for the study abroad, and I would like to
share some things I have learned and how I will commit myself on this study abroad
program.
One thing we’ve discussed a lot is the idea of
cosmopolitanism. We’ve discussed how traveling
to a cosmopolitan area is one where there are shared cultures and a shared
respect of these cultures. As we explore
England, or any other foreign land, we should remember to be considerate of
other people and take the time to learn about their culture. A chapter from “Travel as a Political Act” by
Rick Steves also talks about taking opportunities when traveling to really
connect with people. I hope that I can
make that happen this summer! Other things I have learned this semester include the different money system, British lingo, and how loud Americans are! This summer, I want to commit to reaching outside my comfort zone and get
to know the people I come in contact with during my travels. I want to get rid of any preconceptions I may
have and be open to new experiences. I want
to make the most of my experience by learning from the deep roots of history
and the diverse people that make England a wonderful coalescence of
cultures.
